Sensational Sisters

The 19th Celtic Colours International Festival kicks off with an opening concert that reunites old friends, showcases a world of outstanding female fiddle players, and features one of Canada’s best known and loved performers. Since debuting her “eclectic Celtic” sound thirty years ago, Loreena McKennitt’s unique vocal and harp arrangements of traditional Celtic favourites has received worldwide acclaim, and sold more than 14 million records. While Loreena’s music could be described as serene and reflective, The String Sisters ramp up the energy with six dynamic fiddlers from Ireland, Shetland, Norway, Sweden and the United States, each celebrating her region’s musical traditions. Tonight we also introduce Artists in Residence Lucy MacNeil from Cape Breton and Liz Doherty from Ireland, longtime friends with much music in common. And no Celtic Colours opening concert would be complete without some dancing, provided tonight by Sabra MacGillivray
