The World on a String

With six of the top female fiddlers from Shetland, Ireland, Norway, Sweden and USA, the String Sisters encompass a world of fiddling. Catriona Macdonald, Liz Carroll, Liz Doherty, Liz Knowles, Annbjørg Lien, and Emma Härdelin explore their regional musical traditions together with David Milligan (piano), Conrad Ivitsky (double bass), James Mackintosh (drums), and Tore Bruvoll (guitar). Visiting from Ireland is Paddy Keenan, known as a founding member of The Bothy Band and a musician who has influenced a world of piping. Closer to home, Andrea Beaton, along with Troy, Kendra, and Sabra MacGillivray carry on the tradition of music and dance which their ancestors brought from Scotland to Canada generations ago. Luckily this show will have both a matinee and an evening performance to get your 2015 Celtic Colours started in style.

Kellys Dream

Kelly won’t want to wake from his dream tonight with the likes of this going on in Boularderie, just down the road from his famous mountain. Matthew Byrne is over from Newfoundland with some of his buddies. The Dardanelles singer, song finder and bouzouki player is joined by bandmate Aaron Collis on accordion and Billy Sutton on guitar. Matthew’s repertoire of songs learned, passed down, and found is fitting for Max MacDonald, who’ll be on hand to share some of the songs he’s learned firsthand over the years. A founding member of the Rise and Follies of Cape Breton Island and the Cape Breton Summertime Revue, the singer for Cape Breton’s legendary Buddy and the Boys is sure to have some classics up his sleeve to delight the crowd. Winnie Chafe and her daughter Pat Chafe will complete the night with some traditional Cape Breton tunes and some compositions by Pat for violin and piano. It’s not a dream, Kelly.
