In the early 1970s, a television documentary was broadcast on CBC that delivered an alarming message.
The Vanishing Cape Breton Fiddler suggested that the Cape Breton fiddle tradition was in such a state of decline that it could soon disappear altogether.
This shocked a certain population of Cape Bretoners into action and a group of citizens dedicated themselves to making sure this would never happen.
Regular meetings led to the idea of presenting some kind of fiddle festival.
And in 1973, the first Festival of Cape Breton Fiddling attracted thousands of people to Glendale for a concert featuring more than 130 players.
Preparation for this concert led to the formation of the Cape Breton Fiddlers’ Association.
They have been at the forefront of a resurgence in Cape Breton fiddling that has seen the tradition and style flourish at home and around the world.
For the first time in the Festival’s history, the Cape Breton Fiddlers return to where it all began.
